The new instrument is newly made by Jan Kalsbeek and is based on instruments of Michael Mietke. It has two keyboards FF-f''' with 8'8'4' disposition. The keyboards are transposing for a' 440, 415 and 392 Hz. Stringing is entirely in brass except for some 6 of the highest notes of the 4'.
The sound has a distinct Italian flavour, but the decrescendo is much longer than on Italian instruments. The lower manual 8' has a clear, singing tone which is very suitable for cantabile pieces, whilst the upper manual 8' has more of a speaking quality. Together they form a powerful ensemble in which every single voice can be distinctly heard. Brilliance is added by the 4'. For me it is a sensation to hear how the sound of this marvellous instrument fills our room, something my spinet never could.
The case is painted black with golden bands along the lower part; the interior of the lid is painted red. The stand is based on the Hudigsvall Mietke (which is almost similar to the black Berlin Mietke except that the legs are turned -round- whereas the Berlin legs are square).
You will understand that I devote the major part of my time to discovering the secrets of this instrument and to finding new marvels in music that is familiar to me for several years.
