Annotated List of Instrumentsby Dr. R. Dean Anderson
The following list documents all extant harpsichords presently known to have been built or rebuilt in France during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Also included are a few instruments that survived into the twentieth century but have since been lost or destroyed. The instruments in the annotated list are divided into three periods that coincide with the reigns of Louis XIV (1643-1715), Louis XV (1715-1774) and Louis XVI (1774-1793). Each period subdivides into three groups. The first includes instruments emanating from Paris, the hub of French musical activity during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; the second, instruments from Lyon and the Rhône Valley, which exhibit many similarities; and the third, instruments from other French provinces. The instrument entries are arranged chronologically according to the first known (or supposed) date of work done on the instrument in a French workshop. Most undated instruments for which little information is available are grouped together at the end of each period division. Ascription to a particular time period (e.g., the seventeenth century) is based on an instrument's design, style of decoration, and/or relationship to other instruments. This list is a very much abbreviated version of an annotated list and essay on French harpsichords published in Early Keyboard Journal 19 (2001) 69-171 and 20 (2002) 107-195. For copyright reasons I am restricted in the information that can be supplied on the web. It is, however, hoped that most instruments will eventually be supplied with an accompanying photograph. Information in the instrument entries is organized according to the categories below. MAKER: The name of the maker, working in France, responsible either for building the original instrument or, in the case of a non-French harpsichord, for its initial rebuilding in a French workshop. The designation "ANON." is employed when no maker is identified on the instrument's name batten or soundboard and insufficient information is available to associate an instrument with a particular builder. When an anonymous instrument can be attributed, the maker's name is enclosed in square brackets. A question mark after a name within brackets distinguishes an ascription considered dubious. The designation "UNKNOWN" indicates that no information is available regarding the maker's identity. DATE: For a French instrument the date indicates the year of manufacture; for a non-French harpsichord, the year the instrument was initially rebuilt in a French workshop. Reconstructions of non-French instruments are indicated by the word "ravalement." A bracketed date indicates that the year of manufacture or rebuilding is known but does not appear on an instrument's name batten or soundboard. A question mark after a bracketed date denotes uncertainty about the dating. FLEMISH ORIGIN: The original maker and date of a Flemish instrument extended in compass and/or registers in a French workshop. The maker is identified by the initials carved into the rose. Square brackets are placed around the builder's name if no rose survives but the original Flemish maker has been determined. The word "fake" identifies a deliberately false ascription to a Flemish maker. OWNERSHIP: Present ownership and location of the instrument as well as information about its previous history, if known.
